A Narrative Inquiry into Play Awareness and Utilization Experience of Play Therapists

Abstract
This study was conducted in order to examine the process of change in the experience of awareness and utilizing play as the subject of play therapists through the use of the narratives of the participants and to elucidate their meaning. To this end, the author used a narrative inquiry method that was suitable for elucidating such meaning which also paid attention to the idea of personal experience. The study participants consisted of three play therapists with more than 10 years of experience. The research results are as follows. The participants began learning theories of play after entering graduate school and applied the theories thus learned while starting play therapy. From this starting point, participants developed various experiences contributing to their awareness of and utilization of children¡¯s play, covering more cases of play therapy. The meaning of play awareness and the utilization experience that emerged from interviewing the participants appeared in three themes. as follows ¡®Play-, confirming our existence; Being together,¡¯ ¡®Play-, measuring the depth; Read¡¯, ¡®Play, see with your own eyes; Create.¡¯ Through this, it was found that the participants¡¯ experiences and their accompanying meanings underwent constant reconstitution and reconfirmation by exchanging influences with various contexts. These results confirmed, the importance and significance of the subjective experience of play therapists and how these experiences are meaningful and powerful sources of practical knowledge, Finally, these results provided the basis for a number of, suggestions for follow-up studies to be made.
